To elucidate the behavior of molten fuels as a liquid jet in a shallow pool, which is assumed in a core meltdown accident of an LWR, and develop the evaluation method, we investigated the behavior of the vortical liquid film of the simulated wall-impinging liquid jet using 3-dimensional interface shape data obtained by the experiment in a liquid-liquid system.

Evaluation of eddy currents dependent on excitation pattern in design of pulse electromagnets

In order to design a pulsed electromagnet, it is necessary to consider eddy currents that depend on the pattern shape of the pulse excitation, and to design the structure and set the operating parameters considering the fluctuation of the magnetic field distribution and its effect on heat generation. Evaluation tests of a new bump magnet for the J-PARC RCS showed that the magnetic field distributions at the rising edge of the trapezoidal pattern and at the flat top are different from each other. This was also confirmed by the 3D dynamic magnetic field analysis of OPERA-3d. Since the skin-depth due to eddy currents depends on the time variation of the waveform, the effect is the same as changing the shape of the coil. The measurement of the magnetic field distribution fluctuation was verified and evaluated using a flux meter, search coil, and Hall probe with different measurement principles.

Development of analysis method of gas entrainment phenomena from free surface due to unsteady vortex (Evaluation of three-dimensional distribution of reduction of pressure and identification of unsteady vortex center line)

For evaluation of gas entrainment phenomenon at free surface in reactor vessel of sodium-cooled fast reactor, the gas entrainment evaluation tool named "Stream Viewer" has been developed. In Stream Viewer, depth of surface vortex dimple is predicted by calculating pressure decrease at the vortex center using velocity distribution around the vortex and Burgers vortex model. In this report, a method to identify continuous vortex center lines from a velocity distribution is newly developed. It becomes possible to evaluate three-dimensional distribution of pressure decrease along vortex center line. Then, the method is validated by applying Stream Viewer to an open channel experiment. As the result, it was confirmed that vortex center lines were successfully identified by the improved Stream Viewer. Moreover, it was also shown that the evaluation accuracy of gas entrainment was expected to be improved by considering distribution of pressure decrease along vortex center line.

The Examination of advanced analysis method on unsteady gas entrainment vortex applying AMR method

For the gas entrainment vortex at the free surface in sodium-cooled fast reactors, development of the numerical analysis method to evaluate amount of the gas entrainment from the free surface has been developing. In this paper, the automatic creation of analysis meshes which can suppress the calculation cost while maintaining the prediction accuracy of the vortex shape is investigated, and the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) method is examined to the creation of analysis mesh applying to the unsteady vortex system. The refined mesh based on the criterion evaluated by vorticity, Q-value as second invariant of the velocity and the discriminant for the eigen equation of the velocity gradient tensor is considered, and it found that the AMR method based on Q-value can refine the analysis meshes most efficiently.

The existing beam power of the J-PARC Rapid Cycling Synchrotron is up to 500 kW, and higher radiation doses are concentrated in the injection area. These activations are caused by the interaction between the foil and the beam. To reduce dose exposure to workers near the injection point, we study a new design of the injection scheme. Experience has shown that eddy currents are generated in the metal flange near the magnet owing to the pulsed magnetic field, and the temperature exceeds 100 degrees C. The shield installed in the new injection system needs to have a layer structure, in which an insulator is inserted between iron shields to reduce the eddy current. From the results of the shielding calculation, even if 1 mm of polyethylene was inserted between two 9-mm-thick SUS 316 plates, which serve as shielding material, the shielding performance was reduced only about 5%, and we confirmed that it would function well.

Characteristics of flow field and pressure fluctuation in complex turbulent flow in the third elbow of a triple elbow piping with small curvature radius in three-dimensional layout

In this study, a flow visualization and pressure measurement were conducted by using an experimental setup including test sections of 1/7-scale models of the cold-leg piping of Japan sodium-cooled reactor with high Reynolds number region up to about one million. Regarding the flow field, flow separation appeared in the intrados of the third elbow. However, the separation region was smaller than that observed in the first elbow in the direction normal to the mean flow and was larger in the streamwise direction. This can be considered because of the swirling flow generated downstream of the second elbow which flowed into the third elbow with a little reduction. From the pressure fluctuation test, it was found that prominent frequencies of the pressure fluctuation appeared at about 0.4 in Strouhal number, which corresponds to a nondimensional frequency, in the region from 0 D to 0.4 D downstream of the elbow outlet, where D is the diameter of the piping. And weak peaks of about 0.7 in Strouhal number were observed in the region far 0.75 D downstream of the outlet.

Since tokamak magnetic fusion research has just made a step forward to an international collaborative project ITER, the existing tokamaks including JT-60 are expected to explore more advanced operation scenarios. To test those scenarios in the JT-60 experiment, the basic methods for understanding of plasma equilibrium have been developed. Some of them have been accomplished, and the other are being conducted as follows: (1) A complete plasma shape is precisely reproduced in real time. (2) Eddy current effects are considered for shape reproduction. (3) A plasma current profile in the poloidal cross-section is reproduced in real. (4) For long-pulse DT operation, a method is developed to correct the drifted signal of the integrator for a pick-up coil by employing distant sensor signals. In the symposium, those methods will be explained in detail with the experimental results at JT-60. On the basis of such discussion, we would like to envisage a future of plasma equilibrium control toward ITER and a fusion power plant.

Enhancement of Nondestructive Evaluation Technique for Magnetic and Nonmagnetic Structural Components

ln this report, research works performed in the Structura1 Safety Engineering Group of OEC/JNC are summarized as the final report of the doctoral fellowship. The main objective of this study is for the enhancement of the nondestructive evaluation techniques for structural components of both magnetic and nonmagnetic material. Studies in three topics have been carried out aiming at the quantitative evaluation of crack with the eddy current testing and the validation of a natural magnetic field based NDE method for detecting mechanical damages in a paramagnetic material. ln the first part of the study, an approach to the reconstruction of the natural crack was proposed and implemented with an idealized crack model for its validation. ln the second part, the correlation of the natural magnetization and the mechanical damages in the SUS304 stainless steel was investigated by using an experimental approach. ln part 3, an inverse method of the measured magnetic fields is proposed for the reconstruction of magnetic charges in the inspected material by using an optimization method and wavalet. As the first work, an approach to the reconstruction of an idealized natural crack of non-vanishing conductivity is proposed with use of signals of eddy current testing. Two numerical models are introduced at first for modeling the natural crack in order to represented it with a set of crack parameters. A method for the rapid prediction of the eddy current testing signals coming from these idealized cracks is given then by extending a knowledge based fast forward solver to the case of a non-vanishing conductivity. Based on this fast forward solver, the inverse algorithm of conjugate gradient method is updated to identify the crack parameters. Several examples are presented finally as a validation of the proposed strategy. Experimental study on the avoidance and suppression criteria for the vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder

Experimental validation of the design method to prevent the failure of a thermometer well by the vortex-induced vibration has been performed for the effect of structure damping of a cylinder. The available experimental data in piping were very limited for the high damping region in water flow, because of the difficulty to increase the structure dumping for the one-side supported cylinder in experiments. ln this experiment, high viscosity fluid was charged into the tested cylinders to control the cylinder's damping. Resulting values of the reduced damping are 0.49, 0.96, 1.23, 1.98, 2.22 in the experiments. Reduced velocity(Vr) was increased gradually in the range of 0.7 $$leqq$$ Vr $$leqq$$ 5(Reynolds number at Vr=1 is 8$$times$$10$$^{4}$$). The displacements of the cylinder by the vortex-induced vibration were measured. As the results, Tested cylinders of reduced damping 0.49 and 0.96 showed vortex-induced vibration in flow direction at Vr $$>$$ 1 region. However, in case of reduced damping of 1.23, 1.98 and 2.22, the vortex-induced vibrations in flow direction were suppressed lower than the 1% displacement of the cylinder diameter. ln conclusion, it is confirmed that the suppression criteria of the "Vr $$<$$ 3.3 and Cn $$>$$ 1.2" for vortex-induced vibration in flow direction, which is used in ASME code; "Boiler and Pressure VesseI Code Sec.III Appendix N-1300" and the "FIV design guide in JNC", is reasonably applicable to the one-side supported cylinder in water flow piping.
